Located 230 kilometers West of Tahiti, Taha’a shares the same lagoon with the Island of Raiatea. According to legend, the two islands in the Society archipelago were one and the same until they were separated by a sacred conger eel possessed by the spirit of a princess.
Nicknamed the Vanilla Island because of its numerous vanilla plantations, Taha’a is half the size and much wilder than its lagoon neighbor. The largest agglomeration is just a tiny village. Untouched by tourism for a long time, Taha’a has retained its authentic charm and its lush vegetation. Its sapphire and emerald color lagoon is a giant aquarium in which one can observe all of the local aquatic fauna including moray, gray sharks and carangue to mention just a few. The island does not have its own airport and access is via a boat from Raiatea which uses two passages where dolphins can be seen playing. People come from all over the world for the peace and quiet of Taha’a, for the Ohiri and Puurauti Mountains, both vestiges of the volcanic origin of the island, and for the numerous tiny islets, the motus, each representing a little piece of heaven on earth.
The Taha’a Island Resort and Spa stands alone on the Tautau motu, facing the Island of Taha’a and is undoubtedly the most beautiful spot in the South Pacific. The hotel consists of 60 villas built in the local “faré” style. Made with bamboo, stone and wood, these luxurious suites covered with “pandanus”, the island’s own palm leaves, combine a luxurious décor with local authenticity. Whether on stilts, along the beach or along the tropical garden, they are all decorated in pure Polynesian style. Inside, the mahogany parquet floors, wood furniture and king size bed create a warm and refined atmosphere. In the living room of the suites on stilts, a low glass table enables guests to observe the underwater life. Very spacious and comfortable, these authentic “farés” also possess a large private terrace and direct access to the turquoise water of the lagoon.
The villas on the beach have a patio, a private swimming pool surrounded by stonewalls, a tropical garden, and views of the white sandy beach and the transparent water of the lagoon.
Between dips in these waters, with their multitude of fish, shellfish and different color coral, guests can choose to have lunch alongside the pool or among the trees. The three restaurants, La Plage, Vanille and Ohiri offer a varied cuisine with traditional Polynesian touches. The spa, nestled between a small lake and the lagoon, provides the finishing touch to a vacation in paradise. This very private jewel at the end of the world offers all the luxury and comfort one could possibly hope for.
